Today we are making flatbread pizza! When looking at a typical pizza crust you might think “this is flat bread” but what actually is flatbread? And is typical pizza dough considered flatbread? I’ll give you a hint, typical pizza dough is not a flatbread. When pizza dough is baked, it will rise, but flatbread will not. Why is this? Bread that rises will leaven, and flatbread does not contain any ingredients that will allow it to rise. So our pizzas today will have a flatbread crust and any toppings that your heart desires.

Materials:

  • One mixing bowl

  • Wooden spoon

  • Clean countertop on which to roll dough

  • Rolling pin (optional)

  • Nonstick flat bottomed pan with lid

  • Spatula

  • Plate

Recipe:

(makes one pizza)

Ingredients:

  • ½ cup of whole wheat flour (or use all-purpose)

  • ¼ teaspoon of kosher salt

  • ⅓ cup plain yogurt (unsweetened). Alternatively, use ¼ cup of buttermilk or regular milk

  • Desired pizza toppings, which may include any of the following: marinara sauce, crushed tomatoes, shredded cheese, pepperoni, cooked vegetables, pineapple, etc

Recipe:

  1. Let’s make the dough! Wash your hands carefully.

  2. In a bowl, add the flour, salt, and yogurt/milk.

  3. Mix the dough with a wooden spoon until the dough starts to come together. Then, switch to your hands.

  4. Make sure the countertop is clean!

  5. Sprinkle some flour on it so the dough won’t stick.

  6. Turn the dough out onto the counter and knead the dough for 2-4 minutes, or until it’s not too sticky. If it’s still wet and sticky, add some more flour, one tablespoon at a time. If it’s too hard and dry, add water, one tablespoon at a time.

  7. Put the dough to the side.

  8. Wash your hands, then get your pizza toppings ready!

  9. Roll out the dough. Sprinkle some more flour on the counter so it won’t stick, put the dough on top, and sprinkle with some more flour. To roll the dough, you can use a rolling pin, or you can just press it out with your hands until it’s a thin layer. It doesn’t have to be round!

  10. Put the pan over medium-low heat, no need for any oil or butter! Carefully place the flatbread in.

  11. Let it cook for 2-4 minutes until the bottom is browned and cooked through.

  12. Flip the dough with the spatula.

  13. Use a spoon to carefully put your toppings on.

  14. Cover the pan with a lid and let cook for another 2-4 minutes until the bottom is cooked through and the cheese is melted. Let cool and enjoy!
