March 14th (3/14) is Pi Day, a day dedicated to the number pi, which is approximately 3.14. Pi is actually a really long number, so long that mathematicians don’t know all of its digits yet. Try to remember the first 10 digits: 3.141592653. In celebration of Pi Day, let's make some apple crumble. Apple crumble is very similar to apple pie - just whip up a tasty apple filling and cover with a crispy topping. Enjoy!

Materials:

  • Measuring spoons

  • Knife and cutting board (if the student will be cutting the apple)

  • Mixing bowl

  • Sheet pan

  • Silicone baking mat or parchment paper

  • Oven

  • Small pot

  • Wooden spoon or rubber spatula

Recipe:

Ingredients:

  • 2 tbsp all-purpose flour

  • 4 tbsp brown sugar (divided)

  • 2 tbsp cold butter

  • 4 tbsp rolled oats

  • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon (optional)

  • 1 medium apple, cut into 0.5 inch (approximately) chunks (peeled if desired but not necessary)

  • 2 tbsp water

  • Whipped cream (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Also, make sure you’ve washed your hands!

  2. Put the flour, 3 tablespoons of sugar, butter, oats, and cinnamon (if using) in a bowl.

  3. Mash the ingredients together with your hands until you’ve made a smooth mixture and it’s all the way combined.

  4. Wash and dry your hands.

  5. Place a silicone baking mat or a piece of parchment paper on a baking pan. Sprinkle the crumble on top in an even layer.

  6. Bake the crumble in the oven for about 10 minutes or until the crumble is golden brown and smells yummy.

  7. Now, we’re going to make the filling. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of sugar and apple to a small pot.

  8. Add 2 tablespoons of water and cook over medium heat for about 5-10 minutes, until the apple chunks are softened.

  9. Place the filling in a bowl and allow it to cool.

  10. Once the crumble topping is done, let it cool until it’s cool enough to touch.

  11. Break pieces of the crumble on top of the apple filling and enjoy celebrating pi day! (You can also top this with whipped cream if you’d like.)
